Gerran, Stone Country
Artist: Phyllis Ningarmara
Story: “This is stony country – when I walk across this country there are lots of rocks and little stones. In the wet season the rivers are filled with coloured stones. We call them Gerran.”
This painting also tells another story. It is corroboree story given to the artist by her father that describes the boundaries of the stony Miriwoong country and the artist’s tradtional country at Woorroo Woorrem east of
Kununurra in the Kimberley region. In the corroboree the dancers walk to the north, the east, the south and the west delineating Miriwonng country. As this story was given to the artist she passes it on to her children and
grandchildren.
